Medicare Facts
1. What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, but it also covers some younger people with disabilities or specific medical conditions such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
2. Medicare Has Four Parts:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical supplies.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans): An alternative to Original Medicare, these plans are offered by private insurers and often include extra benefits like vision, dental, or prescription drug coverage.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications, available through private insurers.
3. Medicare is Not Free:
While many people qualify for premium-free Part A, other parts, such as Part B, Medicare Advantage, and Part D, often require monthly premiums, deductibles, and co-pays.
4. You Can Customize Your Coverage:
Medicare Supplements (Medigap) are available to help cover costs not paid by Original Medicare, such as deductibles and co-pays. These plans are offered by private insurers and vary in coverage levels.
5. Enrollment Periods Matter:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window when you first become eligible for Medicare (3 months before and after your 65th birthday).
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, allowing you to make changes to your Medicare coverage.

6. Medicare Advantage and Supplements are Different:
